The Lady of Shalott - a photographic take of JWW's famous painting [07 Jan 2010|09:24pm]

Crossposted from waterhouse_love, so sorry if you see this twice.

Just had to share this, because it's so amazing.

(And honestly, I have wondered for the past few years what it would be like to replicate this painting in a photograph. Apparently, I'm not the only one.)

New Member Ahoy! [01 Nov 2009|01:12pm]

[ mood | cheerful ]

Hello all!  My name's Rini, and I've recently just gotten interested in Pre-Raphaelite art, and I just happened to find this community by accident.  I'm so glad that I did!  This community has helped me discover a lot of wonderful artists, and my favorite so far is John William Waterhouse.

I'm a bit sad that it seems that this community hasn't been very active lately, but hopefully it'll be active again soon!  :D

And now, I'm off to indulge in some yummy Halloween candy and look up more art to oogle at!

Radio Times on Desperate Romantics' [15 Jul 2009|12:07pm]

It's not yet on-line and I'll edit this post when it is with the link to her blog but I think that those who may have been concerned about the upcoming BBC 2 series may take some comfort from the BBC Radio Times critic, Alison Graham column in next week's issue.

I'll transcribe some bits from it.

"Desperate Romantics has sex on the brain - just don't look for any history - says Alison Graham.

I wasn't too far into watching Desperate Romantics, BBC2's jokey melodrama about the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood of Victorian artists .....when I realised that Desperate Romantics reminded me of that episode in Blackadder the Third featuring the poets in the coffee shop.

I am sure you remember the one. It starred Robbie Coltrane as a volcanically tempered Dr. Johnson and Shelley, Coleridge and Byron were all lounging about being comically tragic... before Blackadder observed "There's nothing intellectual about wandering about Italy in a big shirt, trying to get laid". Substitute 'Victorian England' for Italy and you've got Desperate Romantics in a nutshell.....

It feels like an extended boy-band video - it certainly looks like one. ... I can see it's meant to be something of a romp, but I can't help but feel short-changed as the Pre-Raphaelites were an important artistic movement (albeit one that was reviled at the time and frequently since) and I'd quite like to learn something about them.....

(she continues to write a few paragraphs about historical TV dramas)

What struck me forcefully about Desperate Romantics, and others of its ilk, is that someone somewhere is terrified of history seeming "dull", and if it isn't presented to the all-important demographic of Young People as a MTV special, then everyone else will switch off in droves."

She's made good points and I expect other critics in the major newspapers will reflect this.

Resuscitating Ophelia ? [19 Mar 2009|12:48pm]

Greetings, Pre-Raphaelite disciples, and hearty thanks for all the lovely graphics drifting about this community's entries. I was (and am) first and foremost a fan of Shakespeare, whose verbal images then instilled in me a keen appreciation for the scenes captured in the works of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Normally I wouldn't take pains to introduce myself in a comm that does not require it, but I figured a few introductory words might go so far as to resuscitate activity amidst at least a few of you, because I'm dismayed that such a passionate group of art conaisseurs have fallen into such an idle trough! x] I would contribute insight or visuals of my own, but I'm afraid I'm not educated or adept enough in either arena, respectively. And so allow me to extend a plea for new life in these dusty posts! Yours, yours.

icons: John William Waterhouse [25 Jan 2009|01:31am]

It seems an age since I've posted any icons! I have a veritable army of them cluttering up my harddrive, so I plan on getting them up and posted before they all go to waste. ;-P

John William Waterhouse is one of my favourite artists, and I decided to do something a bit different with this batch, including both plain textless icons as well as fancier ones.

As always, never alter my graphics, comment, credit, and enjoy!

John Everett Millais Painting Discovered in Attic [04 Dec 2008|07:34pm]

From Telegraph.co.uk:

The 45 year old woman had been given the art work for her ninth birthday but had kept it in her loft for years and forgot about it until she put her house up for sale.

An eagle-eyed auctioneer who was valuing her belongings spotted the oil painting and was stunned when he realised it was by 19th century artist John Everett Millais.

As well as being worth thousands, the dusty painting has also shed light on a 150-year-old scandal of a love triangle involving Pre-Raphaelite artist Millais.

A plea to the mods and people who sell what they mistakenly call "historic" items... [02 Aug 2008|07:44pm]

[ mood | annoyed ]

Like many of you, I belong to several Victorian-related communities. I joined these communities because I study this period, and also because I love it. I don't know about you, but I am REALLY tired of people posting ads to sell things, and I get especially annoyed when they say it is "historic" when they made it yesterday.

What prompted this post was seeing three posts in a row on my friends page by user foyerdesarts, trying to sell "victorian and rococo" jewelry (clearly they left out the word "inspired") on seeking_ophelia,victorianera, and victorianlife. According to the userinfo on these communities, NONE of them welcome people selling things.

So mods, please do something about this. To people selling: please post your crafts somewhere more appropriate. And at the very least, STOP CALLING YOUR WORK VICTORIAN here. Unless you've miraculously learned time-travel, in which case, clue us all in.

And just to show that I'm not a complete curmudgeon, I'd be more than happy to see adverts here for antique dealers who sell actual period jewelry.

Just one person's opinion. Thanks.

x-posted in seeking_ophelia,victorianera, and victorianlife, so apologies for repeats.
